My research areas are defined by the intersection of feminisms and technical communication. Feminist Technical Communication explores just that intersection and many of the sites of confluence—healthcare, risk, environmental rhetorics—for these two disciplines. This book builds upon my 2013 dissertation “Theorizing an Apparent Feminism in Technical Communication,” which won the Conference on College Composition and Communication Outstanding Dissertation Award in Technical Communication. My work has appeared in Computers and Composition, Journal of Business and Technical Communication, Technical Communication Quarterly, Programmatic Perspectives, and Peitho: Journal of the Coalition of Feminist Scholars in the History of Rhetoric & Composition. (My older publications can be found under the surname Frost.) The same theoretical commitments that inform my research also guide my teaching; I hope my students describe me as fair, collaborative, curious, and open-minded.

Life as an associate professor

This semester I decided to try to hold Thursdays and Fridays sacred and let them be writing days. Today was the first Thursday of the semester and here is what I did:

  • Provided feedback on Master’s capstone projects
  • Provided feedback on a PhD candidate’s job talk
  • Provided feedback to a student applying to the PhD program on their materials
  • Reviewed 3 PhD applications
  • Responded to half a dozen email queries from undergraduate students
  • Arranged to give a talk on campus
  • Completed training for online teaching
  • Wrote two reference letters
  • Reviewed and discussed course scheduling for the fall

I did not do ANY of my own writing, and my inbox is still full. I feel like I could scream and I don’t know how I’m supposed to do all the things. This weekend’s mission: Search for new time-management strategies. Brutal ones.
