I recently received proofs of a copy-edited article of mine that will be published soon. The copy-editor did a great job in lots of areas, but one thing that really bothered me was that they removed the “s” every time I’d written the word “feminisms.” As if there could only be one, capital-F feminism. While I know this was an error based in ignorance and not malice, it reminded me of the very important problem of acknowledging and supporting allies in social justice. My research areas are defined by the intersection of feminisms and technical communication. Feminist Technical Communication explores just that intersection and many of the sites of confluence—healthcare, risk, environmental rhetorics—for these two disciplines. This book builds upon my 2013 dissertation “Theorizing an Apparent Feminism in Technical Communication,” which won the Conference on College Composition and Communication Outstanding Dissertation Award in Technical Communication. My work has appeared in Computers and Composition, Journal of Business and Technical Communication, Technical Communication Quarterly, Programmatic Perspectives, and Peitho: Journal of the Coalition of Feminist Scholars in the History of Rhetoric & Composition. (My older publications can be found under the surname Frost.) The same theoretical commitments that inform my research also guide my teaching; I hope my students describe me as fair, collaborative, curious, and open-minded.
