N. Katherine Hayles, a professor at Duke University, is a central figure in critical theoretical studies of science, technology, literature, and posthumanism. Her 1999 book How We Became Posthuman: Virtual Bodies in Cybernetics, Literature, and Informatics focuses on embodiment in the information age. In this book, Hayles examines the questions of how information lost its body (for more of this you can read her essay Virtual Bodies and Flickering Signifiers online. ), the cultural situation of the cyborg, and the dismantling of the subject in cybernetic discourse. This is dense and important reading; if you pre-read only one book for this English 8780, this is the one I recommend.
