I recently found a link to this Daily Dish article on the techret listserv. It talks about Obama’s speech on race and how it came about — including an admission from the speech writer that he was freaked out, so he went out with friends instead of writing and then ended up writing the speech in one marathon session (Who says these famous political people operate any differently from grad students?) I don’t know that there’s a whole lot of fodder for critical inquiry here, but it’s an interesting story that centers on race, rhetoric, and technology.

My research areas are defined by the intersection of feminisms and technical communication. Feminist Technical Communication explores just that intersection and many of the sites of confluence—healthcare, risk, environmental rhetorics—for these two disciplines. This book builds upon my 2013 dissertation “Theorizing an Apparent Feminism in Technical Communication,” which won the Conference on College Composition and Communication Outstanding Dissertation Award in Technical Communication. My work has appeared in Computers and Composition, Journal of Business and Technical Communication, Technical Communication Quarterly, Programmatic Perspectives, and Peitho: Journal of the Coalition of Feminist Scholars in the History of Rhetoric & Composition. (My older publications can be found under the surname Frost.) The same theoretical commitments that inform my research also guide my teaching; I hope my students describe me as fair, collaborative, curious, and open-minded.
